OUR STORY

We are never truly the owner of something old;

we are merely the guardian for a short time.

The name Alafia derives from a West African Yoruba word that means ‘blessing of peace’, and Alafia Gallery has been extending this philosophy to everyone who walks through the door for more than 24 years. Originally opened to pay homage to African cultures, the Gallery is now home to a large selection of homewares, textiles and jewellery brought together from around the world. The two-storey Elwood landmark houses a carefully curated selection of artisan and handcrafted pieces, each one personally sourced and handpicked by the owner, Lorna.

Since the beginning, Alafia Gallery's vision has been to support and share the unique talents of artisans, NGOs and women's collectives from different parts of the world. At Alafia, we strive to offer high-quality, skilfully handcrafted products without sacrificing the workers' rights. We promote fair-trade awareness and improved working conditions by ensuring just and reasonable payments for stock, and supporting safe workplaces and basic labour rights. Working with organisations and individuals who share these values, we are able to provide our customers with sustainable and ethically sourced products to help them create their own beautiful and unique environments.
